The latest diagnosis that I've had for the last 4 weeks or so is Multidirectional Instability. Turns out that the pain I've been having is due to my shoulder keep subluxating. Basically I've been having physio for the past 6 weeks (ish), starting with isometrics, then to theraband, and this Monday, I graduated onto free weights. Was making good progress until tonight when university exam stress got to me... ...I threw a bag of celery (of all things) accross the kitchen (pretty psycho, I know!), and bang came on the shoulder pain. Looked in the mirror and there was a dimple on my shoulder. Took a photo of it and sent it to my friend who's a physio. She reckoned it had subluxated again, but hadn't relocated spontaneously so suggested a trip to A&E. So off I went. Walking through the corridoors of the hospital on my way to A&E, some porters were pushing a bed. Instinctively I put my arm out to stop the door swinging shut on the bed, and in popped my shoulder. Sharp pain, then comes the aching. Plenty of ice and anti-inflammatories later and the ache is going off. Glad I took the photo of my shoulder dimple- something to show the physio (and the doc if neccessary). So. Long story short, I (probably) don't have a SLAP tear, I have multidirectional instability instead. The treatment is the same in the short term. I'm looking at up to 6 months of physio to try and strengthen the rotator cuff muscles, then possibly surgery if nothing improves. Lesson of the day- DON'T THROW CELERY IN FRUSTRATION!!! |
