Its been a couple of weeks since I posted an update. 2 reasons really. Not much changed between week 8 and 9 and my last post seemed like an update to a friend rather than an informative update that might help offer some insight and education.

Like most everyone else at week 8-9 I did suffer really painful muscle spasms in my shoulder blade. I was told ice was the best remedy. Ice was a little help. Then a substitute therapist told me that she could manipulate my shoulder blade which may untangle some knots and spasms. I was up for anything. I received ultra-sound heat therapy first and then the manipulation. Much better! This type of treatment was performed 3 times over a 5 day period and the shoulder blade is better. I would like to explain what she did but, I cant expalin it very well. She basically slipped her arms through my arms and rotated my shoulder around. It felt like she had 4 arms and 8 hands. The rotation motion was gradual and easy but it sure did help. You might ask your therapist if they can do this if you have similar trouble - and you eventually will I believe.

Week 7 was eventful. New ROM exercises were added to my routine. Some of the exercises include a 1lb weight! Not much to write home about? I am glad to be in a position to start strengthening. My range of motion is well ahead of the expected plan based on the severe frozen shoulder syndrome that was found during surgery. I am still cranking out therpay 3 times per day. I was mentally exhausted during week 6 and didnt think I could keep the 3 a day routine going. But a long talk with my therapist and noticable improvement got me through the tough times. I am still out of work because of the volume of therapy that I am doing (It has nothing to do with my SLAP recovery). My surgeon has removed all range of motion restrictions. The only restrictions are to avoid lifting anything over 3 pounds and no pushing objects like tables, desks or stuff like that.

I am not sure this blog will take because I have been experiencing some computer troubles. But here it goes anyway.

Allie asked about the contradiction of SLAP repair and Frozen Shoulder Syndrome. My forzen shoulder was not diagnosed until the day of SLAP surgery. My surgeon was not phased by the contradiction. He attempted to manually manipulate my FSS while I was under but he had to eventually cut apart the scar tissue because it was so dense. He performed all of this prior to completing the SLAP work (dont isunderstand though - both procedures were performed on the same morning).

4th week was therapy as usual. there was some good news / bad news education.

good news...my slap repair is largely protected by the frozen shoulder syndrome i experienced. remember im the guy with only 2 anchors but with frozen shoulder so extreme it had to be cut many times while i was asleep to free it up. my therapist told me that my range of motion was so limited by frozen shoulder - even after post-op, that he is not the least bit worried about me pulling anchors loose. that explains why he has been so aggressive with my therapy.

hey guys n gals

3 week update is pretty boring...like my current lifestyle. wake-up, eat, do therapy, take meds, take nap, wake up, eat....right.

the only change ive noticed is my arm is aching from my wrist to my shoulder blade. ive been hitting pt very hard. my therapist ranked me in the top 3 of all his patients. told u im motivated. little league starts march 1. i think ive pushed the pt a little too hard since the vote of confidence from my therapist. im slowing down today.

i promised a 2 week update. heres where i am:

I stopped using prescription pain killers aftyer week 1 except at night. sleeping went away almost in total. i could sleep maybe 30 minutes at a time - 3 times at night and 2 times during day. lack of sleep was awful.

i continued with therapy for frozen shoulder repair. therapy is fine. somewhat painful but hey...what do u expect.

i started developing terribly painful muscle knots along my shoulder blade in last 2 days. you can feel them with fingers. they can be massaged out. hurts so good during massage. therapist told me this is not unusual. other muscles are compensating for repairs. i have occasional muscle spasms but they dont mean a thing to me right now.

I thought updates would be more frequent than this but...the first week has been crazy.

Remember that I had SLAP repair + Frozen Shoulder Syndrome (FSS). The combination made rehab a little more challenging. FSS requires immediate rehab. SLAP rehab is usually delayed for weeks while anchors heal.
