I was 8 1/2 weeks post-op when I may have re-torn my laburm. I was doing an exercise which I had been doing for a few weeks prescribed by my physical therapist. It involves reaching behind your back with your bad arm/shoulder, and pulling up with a towel using your good arm. I had done this exercise before with some pain, but it was expected since this involves stretching your interior rotation. Well I was on my 3rd set of 5 seconds when I felt this sharp pain in my shoulder. In all my time since I started therapy, I had never felt this kind of a sharp pain. About 3 days later, I had my physical therapy session and I couldn't do some of the exercises due to the return of the sharp pain. I saw my orthopedist the next day and he said that there was a 20% chance that I may have re-torn my labrum. Since I am a little more than 2 months removed from my surgery, he said my chances of re-tearing it are much lower. He believes that it is simply scar tissue being broken up. I am currently on anti-inflammatories for a week, and if the pain hasn't decreased significantly by then, then I will have to get another MRI arthrogram to detect if it has re-torn. My shoulder is definitely still sore and aches and there are times when I do feel the pinge of the sharp pain here and there. |

I am now 3 weeks post-op and things are going steadily. i started physical therapy 5 days ago and today will be my 3rd pt session. the first session was just an initial eval but also did stretching. she stretched my shoulder to degrees that i thought was impossible at this point. i was laying on the table and she raised my arm 90 degrees and a little further. i was afraid of re-tearing the labrum but it was just some burning pain from not having used the shoulder in such a long time.. she then stretched the arm laterally 90 degrees. same pain. she tried to stretch my arm across my chest, which was just excruciating. |

i'm now at 1 week post-op. i'm quite surprised with my ability to move 1 week post-op. i have more range of motion (ROM) than i had expected. granted, it's still not very much, but i can actually use my arm. prior to the surgery, i thought my right arm would be completely useless. but i can use it to pick very light things up, to dress, shower, etc... i still have problems sleeping. i'll wake up in the middle of the night all the time because of the discomfort in the shoulder. i'll find that i have to move around to lessen any pressure i may put on the elbow/shoulder by leaning on the pillow i put next to me as a cushion. i had the stitches removed and the doc said everything looked fine. |

i'll try my best to remember what my operation day was like. I showed up to the hospital at 615am to fill out the proper paperwork and get prepped for surgery. at about 7:00am, they rolled me into the recovery room to administer the sedation and the local nerve block. they administered the sedative through the i.v. i was pretty much out. i couldn't see anything cuz i was pretty much blacked out, but i did feel them insert the needle into my neck to administer the interscalene nerve block. thats the last thing i remember. |
