Had a bad fall in July 07 at work and shrugged it off. The fall involved grabbing onto a pole so wouldn't land on my face. Twisted left shoulder, but pain was not too bad for a while. Went to ortho doctor who I already knew for minor back issue with lumbar spine. Was sent to PT. The PT had me doing back exercises only and kept asking about the shoulder impingement. Come to find out the spine doctor didn't order any PT for the shoulder (which is what I went to see him for). Yeah, now know it was a spine doctor, not a general ortho doctor but did not realize at the time. He was also acting like he could treat my shoulder problem instead of referring me directly to a shoulder specialist. The back exercises involved lateral pull-downs, push-ups, pull-backs, high velocity arm bicycling, etc. Finally had to stop the therapy as was eventually too time consuming and was continuing to work full-time. After a couple of weeks of not doing the therapy shoulder began screaming out in pain and was becoming very stiff. Within 3 mos. finally had an MRA done on it and it showed a labral tear reaching into the bicep tendon. Had surgery 1 mo. after that and labral repair could not be done (shoulder was too inflammed and was frozen) but the bicep tendon was snipped and let go. Now at 3 mos. post surgery still having stiffness and muscle spasms in shoulder and neck but some relief with the tendon cut. Also had an MRI done on other shoulder in Jan. 08 due to pain from what I thought was overuse issue from not being able to use left arm while in sling and a bankhart tear with a cyst was found! All I can assume is that the exercises that I was doing for my back in PT injured my shoulders causing the labrums to wear down and tear. The lateral pull-downs were the kind that went behind the head (not good in my case). Now in a situation with a still sore post surgical left shoulder and a minimally functioning right shoulder with a bankhart tear with cyst. Given all of this never had bad shoulders before (or thought I did) and just wanted to say beware of aggressive physical therapists and doctors who may be negligent in getting your issues sent to appropriate specialists in a timely manner. |
