Remember Derek only had a sling on for 5 days. I haven't seen this minimal of sling use for a long time on this site. Now although I think this is a little dangerous to not protect the shoulder for 3 weeks to allow the labrum to knit together nicely,
I think those with longer sling usage can have a more difficult go at it.

Once you are past the 6 week mark of protection and you have sufficient strength you should be cleared to drive a stick. For some who are in a sling longer than 3 weeks, I believe it will be further down the road before you feel strong enough.

I should specify that my doctor told me after the first week that he wanted me moving my arm, but that I should wear the sling at night, or out in public, or whenever I was in too much pain. So I wore it on and off for another 2 weeks. Maybe a bit unorthodox, but it seemed to make sense to me, to keep the joint moving a bit when I was in controlled surrounding of my home, as opposed to locked in place for 6 weeks like the other surgeon I spoke to said.

As for my surgery, I only had one anchor put in, so I know my surgery wasn't as serious as others here. That being said, that's not to say that it didn't hurt to shift up until about 2 weeks ago, but it wasn't unbearable pain and my Doc said it was ok as long as I wasn't straining to do it. I had to shift my seat forward to ease the pain and was only taking short trips. I'm at a point now, in week 8 that I have zero pain while shifting, although it still hurts if I have to make a sharp, hand over hand type steer.

I didn't mean to imply that everyone should follow my schedule, I have no idea how intense Susies surgery was.

I do and asked the same question several weeks ago. My doctor told me at 3 day checkup, no driving period, we'll see you in six weeks. At six weeks he gave me the green light for driving an automatic, but when I told him I drove a stick he said, give it two more weeks then just take it easy. I followed his orders and tried at week 8 to back down the drive way and it was too painful and no strength, found my opposite arm doing much of the work, so I said forget it. I tried again around week 10, it was kind of rough, but I managed as long as opposite arm assisted with 5th and reverse, and of course steering.
I had slap II with 2 anchors and started p/t 6 days after surger but didn't start any strength work until 3 months. (second repair)
