Dear Myth,
You are absoultely right about taking Dilaudid. I did not know so much about it until my hubby had a heart attack and subsequent surgery 5 years ago. That is some really strong stuff. I would love a little more pain relief, but I am really trying my best to stick to aleve and advil. Hope Wonderful is better today.

The post op sleeping issue seems to be a problem for many.
I am 4 weeks today and except for 2 random nights, have been sleeping in a recliner. The first week (5 days) I was on pain killers, then then next week I only took them at night. There were a few days in between that I took nothing day or night. Now I have been taking either a percoset or hydro at night.
If I take nothing I tend to wake up every 2 hours, if I take something i may sleep a good 3 or 4 hours without waking. I think the longest Ive slept at a given time since surgery is 4 hours.
I am seeing the Doctor again this week and will ask him maybe for something specifically just for sleep, I dont want to start relying on the narcotics for sleep, I am in pain but am taking them more at night to sleep than anything. I just am fearful that the Dr will not want to prescribe a sleep med, drs seem to be very 'weird' lately about dispensing medicine, thinking everyone has alterer motives
If not I may try to tylenol pm or advil pm like someone else mentioned
Good Luck, I hope you can get some rest!

Hey guys,
Really don't wish anyone harm, but wouldn't it be wonderful if we could all find a dr. that had been through what we are going through. I bet their practicing techniques would change dramatically along with their compassion. I wonder how they would feel on the other side when they tell you "it will get worse before it gets better". Then when you ask him about the awful problems you experience just trying to get some rest, they come back with "do the best you can." I bet they would come up with better solutions to these problems, don't you?

Rolled Onto Shoulder During Sleep-- Excruciating 1 Month, 3 Weeks ago

Oh My Gosh!
I'm in so much pain- I can't see straight.
I am so blinded I'm seeing stars.
I finally stopped hyperventilating long
enough to sit down and sip some juice.
It's almost 7am here, and around 6:15am
I found myself on the couch instead of the recliner,
Altho I don't have recollection of moving, it's possible
that I went to the restroom in the middle of the night
and layed down on the couch instead of getting back
into the recliner.
All I know is that I woke up in excruciating pain,
I had rolled over somehow onto my shoulder-
It felt like my shoulder insides were being ripped apart.
I didn't have time to even think- as I started screaming
so loud, and then went into hyperventilation.
I couldn't even explain to my Husband what happened for
the first 15 minutes.
I took some dilaudid as soon as I could hold drink in my mouth.
I had gotten down to only taking pain meds 2 times per day- and I was so proud of that.
I can't believe the pain.
My arm and shoulder and shoulder blade area continues
to uncontrolably sort of spasm, I can feel and SEE the muscles
twitching.
I hope I didn't do any internal damage to the repairs.
I'm sort of thinking of getting up to get the ice packs but
I already feel so cold, from crying, and it's damp and raining outside. I wonder if I could do heat? I really wish I had a hot tub about now. Or I would even be happy with a hot tub bath but, I can't get myself in or out of the tub just yet if I sit down.
I'm still taking showers- it's safer right now still-
Well, just wanted someone to talk to.
My husband left for work shortly after this happened.
I feel real lucky that he was still home to help me when
it happened.
The pain meds are starting to kick in and the pain is not as sharp but it feels like someone picked me up and swung me around by the arm- bicep hurts a lot too.
Well, Thanks for listening. I feel really alone right now, isolated, and a bit overly sensitive.
It's really comforting to know that you all are here and
that I can write to some other people who can relate to what I'm going through. Thanks so much just for being here.
Going to try to get back into the recliner and get some more sleep. Maybe things will seem brighter when I wake up. Again.

I am just over three weeks out from a slap tear surgery. 6 anchors total. I read this board almost everyday and after last night sleep or lack of sleep I should say, I signed up.Your experience sounds exactly like mine. Arm is killing me at night, can't sleep, tired of pain meds and occasional jerking movement causes crippling pain. I don't care about pain, just want sleep. After therapy tomorrow,I am going to the family Doc and getting some sleep med. I have tried advil pm and tylenol pm with very poor results. Those usually will knock me out. Well good luck with getting some rest.
