I am an avid weight lifter and am somewhat depressed I wont be able to lift for awhile. I have to have 2 anchors for my labrum tear. Any idea of when I can hit the weights again without restrictions?

I had two anchors put in as well four months ago. I am a powerlifter and was really bummed like you were. The only advice I can give you is DONT push it, myself, my doc, and my PT took a very agressive approach to getting me back to training early which almost led to another surgery. I started using very light weights (under 10 lbs) around week 6 which caused alot of inflamation and delayed my return even more. After the inflamation subsided and I was back on track I was cleared to use "normal" weights around week 10-12 (closer to week 12). I am in my early 20's and had a lot of muscle mass before surgery so I was a little faster than most people but plan on not working upper body with regular weights for about 12-14 weeks, I know it sucks bro but you will feel a million times better than before surgery. Plus it gives you time to work on cardio and turning your legs in to tree trunks

I know how you feel too, I'm a college baseball player and this is my second time around with the labrum. I had 2 anchors and 4 sutures put in. After the first one I started lifting about 3 months out and that was way too soon, probably contributed to a re-tear. After talking to the therapist and OS I was informed that the repair is not fully healed for six months. After 4-5 months it ok to start lifting real lightly. 5 months would be the best bet and the most cautious one. The good thing is it all comes back relatively quick once you get back into it full throttle, but connan is right, DON'T PUSH IT. Listen to what your body is telling you and it'll be fine.

Prioperception is the joints ability to tell where it is. Kind of how you can walk in complete darkness without falling over. These receptors don't recover till approx six months after surgery. So you may not necessarily know if your shoulder is being pulled in an awkward way, you mainly have muscle memory to rely on but if you're lifting in a new ROM, you won't have muscle memory...bad news...So take it really easy. I strongly strongly recommend swimming.

"no restrictions" Now that is going to be difficult. From the conversations I have had with my doctor he has made it abundantly clear that after my three anchors there will always be restrictions. Im 7 months post op and I still have issues so far as discomfort and soreness after activity. I have yet to be able to return to any real upper body weightlifting. I realize that it takes time but man it is frustrating and once I start Ive been told to modify what I do. No shoulder presses and no bench press elbows goin past your back.

I know this must be so frustrating, but bench pressing into the deep range is how most lifting tears happen. Your OS does not want you to re-tear. Also the pain you get after activities, what specifically do you do? Do you feel the discomfort right away or later that night or the next day? Sharon
