Second Labrum Tear Surfing 6 Months, 3 Weeks ago Karma: 0
A little backgroud, Had full bankart repair with a capsular shift 6 years ago. Results were good for 5 years until I dislocated surfing again back in Novermber. Had MRI and confirmed that the labrum is torn and doc is sugesting another Bankart (Open... First one was done Open and he stated that he prefers that way on repeat surgery even though he is a Antroscopic specialist). Difference between shoulder this time (other than the fact I dislocated about 1000 times after the first and so far only about 10 times since I did it again in november) is the Grinding/Clicking. The Clicking Grinding and Poping are absolute unreal, I can hear it clicking all day and it has started to effect everthing I do. I spoke a little with him about this and states could be arthritis!!! I just turned 27 and this is not good news. Any thoughts if the Surgery is going to help this clicking poping? Also Doc seems to think he can get me back in Water after about 3 months Surfing, last Doc kept me out for a year. This time is just Bankart repair he says no capsule shift neccessary.. PLease Help!

I'm a surfer too and had a reverse bankhart/posterior labrum tear. My surgery was 7 months ago and arthroscopic. I didn't have capsular shift or anything like that, and I just finally hit the water last month. In my experience, anyone telling you you'll be back in the water in 3 months is absolutely, 100% crazy, or blatantly lying to you, or both. At 3 months I could barely carry a shopping bag, much less paddle. I think open repair takes even longer (I could be wrong here). My surgery did not correct any grinding,clicking,popping...actually made it worse from the scar tissue the results from the surgical intrusion.
I wish you good luck going through this, but don't count on a 3-month turnaround and go get a couple of second opinions.

Maybe the clicking grinding is somthing I am just going to have to get used to? When you got back in the water after 6 months did you arm feel strong? thinking about getting this surgery ASAP. I think 3 months in probably pretty fast too but this has made my surfing go bad. I feel like I can't surf well at all now. Any golfers in here? If I can't surf for 6 months when can I hit the greens?

I'm still online so I'll chime back in. I started some lite strengthening PT around month 4. I also swam lightly in a pool a few times a week for 2-3 weeks before going in the ocean. So when I hit the water I didn't feel completely useless, but I was/am still weak. Longboard only so far, and sadly, it's like learning all over again.
