Since overcoming last year's ACL reconstruction wasn't challenging enough, I've finally decided to take care of that nagging left shoulder. 13 years ago, I met my wife -- in one of our first outings, we had a waverunner accident that dumped my wife off the machine, but pinned my arm back as it was wrapped around her (of course :-), however with my deft agility and balance I managed to stay on -- only to tear the heck out of the shoulder in the process. Right arm was 3' long, the left felt about a good 10'.
Never paid much mind to it -- just lived with occasional pain, which could be addressed via advil and Mel Gibson style adjustments -- ie breaking up some scar tissue with the proper allocation of force. In the past 3 months however, that technique failed to provide relief, and weight lifting (I'm a low weight, higher rep person) was proving difficult. I never could do flys -- wrote them off awhile ago, but push-ups, lat work, and bi-cep push-ups are now getting difficult, if not almost not possible. Had an Xray and MRI -- sure enough SLAP tear. Trying to decide if surgery is the answer -- I have full range of motion, just nagging low levels of pain and more and more weakness. If I do -- will have to wait until late Fall as Softball season is in mid-stream until then. Fortunately - it is not my thowing arm and seems to have no consequence on my glove, bat, or golf swing either. Have to talk to my ACL PT guy and see what I'm in for wrt to the SLAP rehab. He'll probably be drooling to get back at me :-) cheers, Mike in Austin |
