Arthroscopy is a surgical technique that uses narrow surgical instruments inserted through small incisions in the skin. One instrument is a camera, called an arthroscope, used to examine the interior of the joint. Tools for the actual procedure are inserted through secondary incisions. The benefits of this type of surgery are many when compared to a traditional open procedure. These include. Less scar tissue –The smaller incisions lead to minimal external scaring when compared to an open procedure. Internal scaring is also less due to the less destructive path through the body. Faster recovery time – The less invasive path also allows the body to heal faster. Displacement of connective tissue is lower and thusly they can rebuild faster.
Arthroscopic surgery is use d for a variety of joints including shoulder, knee, elbow, and hip.
