Had surgery on March 13, 2008

Surgery went very well...  I was at a private surgery clinic here in Calgary.

Arrived at 6:10 a.m. for an 8:00 a.m. surgery.  lots of questions, blood pressure, pulse and temperature taken.  Changed into the gown and washed the shoulder.  then the IV was started.

One of the nurses explained the process before & during surgery as well as the sling  I would be in...  Then a surprise for a Canadian.. The WCB pays for me to have my very own Polar Care 300.  This has proved to be a huge blessing.  The nurse also strongly recommended that I speak to the Anaesthiologist  to see if he would do the nerve block... apparently only a few of them do this.

Anyways the next person to see me was the OR nurse, she just confirmed everything was in order.  Then the Anaesthiologist came in.  He checked me out and we talked about the nerve block.  He does do nerve blocks but feels it is not required with this surgeon.  He and another nurse confirmed that my surgeon uses a lot of freezing during the surgery and his patients do very well without the block.,

Finally the surgeon came in.  he confirmrd the details and signed the shoulder he was doing the surgery on.

They walked me into the OR and had me reconfirm the correct shoulder to do surgery on.  Then laid me down on a very uncomfortable :flattened out" beach chair table.  There was a bit of humour then somebody said "you probably don't feel that yet'... by the time she finished her sentence, i felt it... I said "i feel it now" and I was out.

I woke up in the recovery room...  I asked for my glasses and promptly went back to sleep.  They kept me in recovery for about an hour, gave me two percoset andwheeled me back to where I started,  The surgeon visited us (my wife & I) and told us what he found.  I had a labral tear that was out in the joint and a decent amount of fraying of the rotatoe cuf.  He just had to clean this up, no anchors or repairs.  He also said that the tissue around rhe bursal sac was "incredibly inflamed".  He mentioned removing the inflamed tissue?  I'll ask more at my follow up appointment on April 7 but I assume he did a subacromial decompression.

No work or Physio until after the follow up visit in April but he did assign me two ROM excercises to do 5 times a day...  Boy do they hurt today!
