I have been a shoulder/upper limb surgeon for 20 years.

I have one recent case, the first ever noted by myself, with a specific complaint of a squeaking shoulder after labral repair surgery, indeed, the patient even produced a video with audio.

There is no doubt about the squeaking being present, but it was painless, and lasted no more than 8 weeks in the relatively early post-op phase - within 2 months of the surgery, and although further investigations were done, no new pathology was found, the repair was fine, and, with reassurance, the sqeaking simply went away.

It is not clear why it happened, but this was just a perplexing occurrence which created no more than anxiety at the time, but then just settled.

My shoulder has been squeeking for a few years now and have had multiple surgeries since I first noticed it. It isn't painful and therefore haven't ever asked for it to be fixed but have questioned my OS as to what it could possibly be, he isn't sure. However, I think many people on this forum have noticed a squeeking after shoulder surgery because we've had an injury/surgery and are making ourselves more aware of sounds/cracks/pops, etc and therefore question it more then perhaps a person with no pathology would.

One thing I can agree with great certainty...if it makes a noise and it doesn't hurt, just let it be.

Since I started the topic, I feel obligated to write a follow up. It has been now 4 month(16 weeks) since I had my labral repair. The squeaking sound went away at around 11 weeks post-op. I was told that the sound is likely due to the bursae getting significant pressure when we move our shoulder on those early stages after surgery as there is so much weakness. Once you get more strenght on the rotator cuff muscle, this eventually will allow for the joint to have more support and more space is created. I did some research and I decided to use the kinesiology tape to tape the shoulder in a way that more support was given to the bursae. This did the trick. Never had any problems after this. I dont tape my shoulder anymore as I have gain strength and I am more mobile.
Hopefully, this help ease other peoples mind as they go thru this.

I am currently approximately 6 months post op for a labral repair. At approximately 5 months I noticed a concerning squeak coming from my shoulder. The squeak occurred overnight and was accompanied by a vibration sensation in my shoulder but produced no pain. After following up with my OS he assured me that it was related to scar tissue. I noted the posts about loose hardware prior to seeing him and he said that the squeak was very unlikely due to hardware when I mentioned what I had read. Unfortunately I was unable to reproduce the squeak in the office. I decided to get a second opinion because I found it hard to believe that scar tissue would all of a sudden start producing such a loud squeak. I was able to produce the sound at the second dr's office and was assured that it was not scar tissue. A follow up MRI was rescheduled and the MRI did not show any signs of loose hardware in the joint. I was able to capture a video of the loud squeaking and after returning to the first OS (the one that performed the surgery) he agreed it was not scar tissue and also noted some excess suture in the surgery images. At this point he recommended going back in to remove the sutures and look for any loose bodies that may be in the joint. I decided to get one last opinion before scheduling another procedure, and when the surgeon entered the room his first words were "its suture." He arrived at this only from reading my very brief new patient notes that essentially said my shoulder squeaks after I had surgery. He mentioned he had seen this before and had even spoken to the suture manufacturers in the past that said squeaking was normal. He was shocked to hear this(not sure how long ago this was) because the sutures do not degrade with time and are even referred to as fiber wire. He also noted the images from the original OS and said that there was a lot of excess suture. He said he typically cuts the excess suture material much closer to the knot and tries to bury the tails if possible so they will scar over and not have the opportunity to unravel and rub between the joint. He suggested that the sutures be removed and that foreign bodies should also be looked for during a follow up scope. I decided to switch surgeons and go with him for the follow up investigation. I will let you know what is found if anything.
