So I saw my OS for the first post-op appt today. I asked him about the clicking I still feel, (which was the main reason I had the surgery), so he moved my shoulder in all directions to pinpoint the clicks and said it was deeper inside. He also said that it was a different clicking than before surgery. I completely disagree. The clicking feels the same to me. By the way, while he was moving my arm around I thought I was about to cry. Keep in mind it has only been 2.5 wks since surgery and my range is not back where it use to be. He also said I don't need physical therapy. I guess that's a good sign. He showed me pictures of the layer of scar tissue he cleaned up which was pretty cool looking.

The one thing that concerns me is that he said he "thinks he got all the scar tissue." Thats the whole reason we decided surgery and now you "think" you got it all. He told me to try to ignore the clicking and keep taking the pain meds as needed. He thinks the clicking should go away on its own in time. In time?? I've given it enough time. Is it possible for scar tissue to come back only after 2.5 weeks post op? He wants me to come back in 4 weeks. I have a feeling he doesn't know what is causing this and will want to go in again. 2 surgeries in a 6 month period is enough for me.

I think I want a second opinion before I go back to my OS. I feel bad for doing so, since he was the only Dr. I saw who could fix my wrist and forearm and solve the bicep tendon issue I was having. Does anyone know of an orthopedic surgeon specializing in shoulders in the southern california area?

First off, you should never feel bad for wanting to get another opinion...after all, it is your shoulder and you are the one who has to live with it, not him. Trust is is very important when it comes to surgery, and it seems as tho he's not working all that hard to keep it right now. It sounds like this is something that is really concerning you, so I would agree that a second opinion makes sense...and it is that, an opinion, which you are entitled to. I know I wouldn't be impressed to hear my surgeon say 'i think i got it'. My surgeon came right out after this past surgery and apologized that he couldn't get all the scar tissue because he was worried about causing further complications...I would rather hear that, then I think I got it and wondering during my whole recovery what to expect in terms of recovery.

As Leanne said, you are entitled to a second opinion. However, in actuality, it can be difficult to see a different surgeon, especially after 2 surgeries. I was turned away by 3, given an argument by another, and finally got in to see someone when I did not disclose previous surgery at the time of making the the appointment. They do not want to deal with problems possibly caused by others, or unhappy patients. It is a very sad reality - one of my hobbyhorses.

As for the scarring, some people do tend to scar a LOT and there is really nothing that can be done other than PT to keep ROM. I had extensive clean up of scar (on video - there was a LOT) and it was all back in very short order - weeks or less. The tissues were unrecognizable at the latest surgery - replacement. "severely altered surgical field due to extensive scarring from superficial layers to deep." Yes, this is the extreme, and it is frustrating, painful and really life-altering.

Sorry to be a tad negative, and sadly every problem cannot be solved, but don't stop trying. I sure took it as far as I could, and right now I'm feeling in shock - an artifical joint, significantly less ROM and the same pain. Sure hope it improves, but I'm DONE.

Thank you both for your reply. The I worry about second opinions, is the fact they might not want to see me since I have had 2 previous surgeries. My physical therapist that I saw for my first surgery knows a great shoulder doc that does work on patients that have failed other surgeries. He mentioned he would have no problem getting me in to see him. I'm thinking about calling my PT (since my dr doesn't want me going) and telling him my situation. My PT also works there 2 days a week so it would be nice if I could get him to come with me. I'm not sure if I should wait until I'm 6 weeks post-op to get another opinion, or do it now? I am 3 weeks today. My parents think I should do nothing for now and wait awhile. Boy is that frustrating to hear.

Anyways, I hope your healing is coming along. Take care.

In my opinion, it is WAY too early to be worrying so much. It does take a long time to see results from any shoulder surgery. The inflammation and disruption to the soft tissues haven't had enough time to heal - it takes weeks - months even.

Hang in there- we all know how frustrating this can be. This is a good place to talk about things with people who understand and support you.

i would suggest that calling your PT might not be a bad idea, if anything, it gives you a chance to ask any questions you may have and it could give you some peace of mind. Secondly, I have never heard of any OS who has said to someone they don't need physio after even just a clean up...making sure your shoulder is moving properly is important for successful outcomes. I definetly think you should be seeing a PT for guidance.
