Hello again

I had a slap tear repair 5 weks ago with 3 sutures - I have been advised to spend 50% of my time when I am at home without the sling on and to continue with my physio (PT) 3 times a day.
I have started getting a strange numbness and a feeling like some one is gripping the top of my arm between the bicep and the shoulder muscle, also a grinding pain in the joint when I do internal rotaion, plus the sensations are all pretty intense if I am even slightly late with my pain meds. Can I ask if anyone else on here has had similar or are these usual sensations?
I am also getting odd pains down my arm and a lot of strange sensations in my neck and shoulder. I do realise the musclues will have shrunk and need to be stretched but as I have never been throught anything this before I am a bit concerned about whats normal.

Cheers

Kieron

I can only speak for myself but the sensations I was feeling at 5 wks post op was...pain, discomfort, aching, grinding noises (my five yr old said my shoulder was "crunchy"), and then more pain. I took myself off pain meds after two or three days so not sure if that might be affecting you as you said that when you are late there is pain. Maybe you have masked the normal healing aches and pains with the meds and when your late that is what you are feeling. As always if you suspect something wrong definitely consult your dr.

Hello again,

I think I have been masking the pain pretty well as you said, I did change meds, the ones I got from the hospital (Tramadol) made my head spin, so I am taking 50 mg Diclofenic. I am seeing my physio monday so I will ask then, it does sound like I am getting some of the symptoms you have had which at least puts my mind at ease until then - I am also wondering if my sleep pattern is having a detrimental effect - I keep thinking back to when I got the injury and wishing I'd stayed home that day!
Never realised the recovery would be much more painful than the original condition, which was pretty bad in the 1st place!

Cheers

Trust me it's gets better. Several times throughout my recovery I thought something's wrong or I messed something up, that's just your body healing and it takes several months to sometimes over a year fully heal.

Hang in there - 5 weeks post-op is not very long... give yourself time to heal. The Diclofenic is an anti-inflammatory med - that's prob why you can tell when it's wearing off.. your symptoms sound to like in par, your other muscles are compensating so those other aches/pains will happen. I rememeber the popping/cracking when I first began to move mine and thought for sure I had completely ruined it.
Your right, sleep is so important, more that most realize. I spent my first 8 weeks sleeping in a recliner, then I grsduated to a "nest" I made in my bed. I did not allow myself daytime naps, so that I would sleep better at night. I also found ice worked better than ANY pain meds, seriously.
Keep your eye on the prize, your recovery - one thing I would do differently... focus more on my PT, and ROM. Right now, 2 years later I wish I had that ROM - had I worked harder I would have it...
