Okay, I know we have a few avid cyclists here so let's see what you guys and gals can come up with for me.

I went biking on Saturday. A really tough ride (for me) 16 miles, 2 hours, all hills (Santa Monica Hills.) Anyway, I can not get my legs to feel good again. I have a deep nagging ache that hasn't gone away yet. The smallest amount of leg effort now results in feeling like I have just climbed up 1000ft.

What have I done? What should I do? And how long will it last?

      Thanks everyone!
      Andy

Andy, the chances of you doing serious damage to your legs is minimal. I assume you are talking about muscles aching, not joints. If that is the case, what likely has happened is you just overdid it. General guideline for pain such as this is that if it takes 72 hours or less for it to resolve, it is little microtears in your muscles, which are necessary to muscle to rebuild bigger. It if is over 72 hour is is likely lactic acid.

To get rid of it faster, substantially decrease the intensity of your exercise, but increase duration. Go for a long walk, for example. Your body will utilize lactic acid as fuel and will help you decrease discomfort.

Thanks! It's deep in the muscle pain, not joints. If it was joints, I'd be a lot more worried.

Any advice on how to heal faster? I've been cramming in protein and using the sauna to get blood flow going. Anything else I can do?

It's hard not to ride around here without overdoing it. Every trailhead usually starts with a 600ft - 1000ft climb!

      Thanks!
